Becoming Oxygen
Loving Your Cells
I think of my cells as my children, each one working in beautiful harmony to sustain my life—a personal symphony of movement, renewal, and connection. As I explored the wonders of science, I found myself contemplating the intricate intelligence of cells. What are they truly about? How do they operate in this vast, microscopic world within me? These questions led me inward, focusing not just on the concept of cells but on my own cells. What began as curiosity soon transformed into deep gratitude for my body and my life itself.
I started to see my cells as individual beings deserving of love and appreciation. I learned to visualize them, to imagine myself as oxygen, traveling through my veins, reaching places in need of energy and healing. I called this practice "Cell-f" (self) love—an intimate meditation on the life within me.
At some point, this journey deepened. I no longer just imagined sending oxygen to my cells—I became the oxygen itself. I envisioned myself shrinking down, dissolving into the air, merging with a single molecule of oxygen. I floated freely, carried effortlessly with each inhale, drawn into the depths of my lungs, through the intricate alveoli, and into the flowing rivers of my bloodstream. I drifted along in wonder, traveling to where I was most needed. With each beat of my heart, I was delivered to a cell eager to receive me, to take in my energy, to transform. I became an essential part of the dance of life within me.
This exercise of visiting my cells, of becoming oxygen itself, was unknowingly the beginning of learning to "love myself." I noticed that my self-acceptance and appreciation for living grew and began to affect how I felt day by day in a profoundly positive way. I became gentler with myself, less critical, more forgiving. As my inner world shifted, so did my interactions with others—I became more patient, more compassionate, more loving. Speaking to my cells became a sacred practice, an ongoing meditation present in every breath I take.
When we acknowledge the miracle of our bodies—the way they tirelessly function, repair, and sustain us—we open a door to deeper self-love. This practice became my "back door" to embracing myself fully, and in doing so, it transformed the way I moved through life. My awareness expanded, my interactions became more fulfilling, and a natural sense of healing emerged.
I wish to share this experience with you.
Becoming Oxygen
Take in a slow, deep, conscious breath. Feel the cool air entering your lungs, the warmth as it leaves. Oxygen is the essence of life, the key to our existence on this magnificent planet.
We all share this breath—cycling it through our bodies, releasing it back as carbon dioxide, feeding the trees, the oceans, the endless rhythm of Earth. In this moment, you are a living part of this ancient and sacred exchange.
With each inhale, visualize oxygen molecules flooding your lungs, dancing within you, filling you with vitality. Let your awareness travel with these molecules as they pass through the walls of your lungs into your bloodstream. Imagine them weaving into your veins, winding like rivers through your body—just as roots spread beneath a tree, as tributaries flow through the earth.
Your blood, pulsing with life, carries this oxygen to every cell, feeding and energizing every part of you. With each breath, you are not just breathing—you are nourishing, sustaining, and intimately engaging with the design of your own existence.
You are actively participating in this elegant dance of life.
Body Awe
Breathe in, slowly and deeply. Feel the quiet hum of energy within you. Imagine your cells as a vast, harmonious community—each one essential, each one devoted to your well-being.
These cells are your “Cell-f.” They are you.
With each inhale, imagine oxygen sweeping through your body, bringing vitality and renewal to every cell. Picture each organ, each nerve, and each muscle carrying out its unique role in perfect rhythm. Your liver filters and cleanses. Your kidneys purify. Your heart beats, strong and clear. Your nerve endings remain calm yet alert. Your muscles remain supple and strong. Your brain orchestrates this magnificent symphony of life within you.
Pause for a moment to simply appreciate this miracle.
Every second, your body performs countless intricate processes, all working together to keep you alive. Acknowledge this brilliance. Celebrate it.
This is Life
Through this practice of awareness, I have come to see my body not as something separate from me, but as an intimate and sacred space of connection. Tuning into this cellular world has made life infinitely more fascinating and far less daunting. My health feels more accessible, my thoughts clearer, my outlook brighter. By refocusing my mind in this way, I have found a path toward uniting body, mind, and spirit in the present moment.
This is life.
This is you—fully alive, deeply aware, and infinitely connected.
The Scale of Your Existence
Pause for a moment and look out your window. Observe the light outside—where is the sun in the sky? Is it rising, painting the horizon in soft pastels? Or is it sinking, casting long shadows and igniting the clouds with fiery hues? Imagine the cycle of dawn and dusk wrapping around the Earth in real-time, an endless transition between day and night. If you could step back far enough—out into space—you would see it as a glowing band, separating the illuminated side of the planet from the darkness of the cosmos.
Now, zoom in. Imagine the vastness of the globe beneath you, spinning silently through space, and locate yourself upon it. Where are you at this moment? Think about your placement relative to the sun. Are you basking in daylight, or has the sun dipped below your horizon, leaving you in night’s embrace? Picture yourself exactly where you are—sitting in your home, your office, outdoors, or anywhere else. Imagine the walls around you, the building that shelters you, and how it rests upon the landscape. Feel your presence within it, a single being nested inside a structure, which itself is cradled by the Earth.
Now, come into your body. Feel the weight of yourself in your chair, the pull of gravity grounding you in place. Even as you sit in stillness, know that you are moving—carried by the rotation of the Earth, spinning at over 1,000 miles per hour, while simultaneously orbiting the sun at 67,000 miles per hour. Yet, in this moment, you are completely still. You are both motionless and in motion—a paradox of existence.
Zoom out again. Imagine your city, then your state, then your continent. Visualize your location on a map, then pull back further—envision looking down at Earth from the perspective of space. Pinpoint exactly where you are on this vast, living sphere. From this distant view, you are but a tiny dot on a massive world. And yet, you are able to comprehend both extremes—the intimate smallness of your presence and the grand immensity of existence itself.
Let your mind stretch across the planet. Picture the immense landmasses, the continents divided by vast oceans, their waters in constant motion. Feel the richness of the rainforests breathing in carbon dioxide, the frozen brilliance of the polar ice caps glistening in the sunlight. Imagine the celestial brushstrokes of the Aurora Borealis dancing above the poles, waves of light shimmering in the night sky.
Take a deep breath.
Now, begin the journey back. Return to your immediate surroundings—your chair, your breath, your heartbeat. Feel the weight of your body once more. Take another full inhale, and as you exhale, slowly open your eyes. Carry with you this expanded awareness, keeping the enormity of the Earth alive in the edges of your imagination.
You are here. You are part of something vast. You belong to this universe.
Welcome to a much larger world than you have ever known.
